Should the text on my YouTube thumbnail be in Urdu or English?

A thumbnail is read in a fraction of a second while someone scrolls. The question is not which language your viewers speak but which one their eye takes in fastest on a small screen. Many younger viewers in the twin cities type and read Roman Urdu or English all day on their phones, so a two-word English or Roman Urdu hook lands quickly. A channel reciting naats, explaining current affairs or teaching Urdu literature has viewers who expect and read Urdu script easily.

Urdu script has practical challenges at small sizes. Nastaliq fonts are beautiful but their detail disappears when shrunk, and letters can become hard to separate. If you use Urdu, choose a bold Naskh-style font or a heavy Nastaliq designed for display, keep it to two or three words, and check it at phone size. Mixing scripts on one thumbnail, such as an English word with an Urdu one, usually looks busy; pick one.

The best test is your own channel. If you have uploaded thumbnails in both styles, compare click-through rates on videos with similar topics and traffic sources. If you have Test & Compare, run one video with the same image and different-language text. Whatever language wins, the rule about not repeating the title stays: if the title says "Islamabad to Murree by car in winter", the thumbnail might simply say "Snow chains?" and let the picture do the rest.
