Does adding a location tag on Instagram help a local business reach nearby people?
It helps a little and costs nothing, so tag your real location on every post and Reel. Location pages collect posts from that place, and some people browse them. But the tag will not carry a twin-city business on its own; the name field, captions mentioning the area, and Reels people finish do more.
The longer answer
When you tag a location, your post becomes part of that location's page on Instagram, alongside posts from customers who tagged the same place. Some people do browse these pages — usually tourists or people planning a visit to a specific market or restaurant street. It also tells Instagram where your business is, which is one signal among many when it decides who might be interested. Tagging is quick, so there is no reason to skip it, but expecting it to produce footfall by itself sets you up for disappointment.
Choose the most useful tag rather than the broadest one. "Islamabad" is shared by an enormous number of posts and your Reel disappears inside it. Your own business location, if it exists on the map, is the most accurate. A well-known nearby landmark or market — Centaurus, Giga Mall, Saddar, a specific sector Markaz — can be useful when people know it better than your shop name. If your business location is missing or wrong, fix it through the Facebook page linked to your Instagram, because that is often where the place data comes from.
The stronger local signals are in the content. Say the area in your captions and on-screen text the way people say it: "near F-10 Markaz", "Bahria Phase 7", "opposite Kashmir Road". Film things that are recognisably local. Encourage customers to tag you and the place when they post, which puts your business on their followers' feeds as well. And remember that Instagram is not where most people in Islamabad search for "near me" services; that is Google Maps, so a business that depends on walk-ins should get its Google Business Profile right before worrying about Instagram tags.
